Text Structure

In my book “April Morning” by Howard Fast, The main conflict is that the main character does not get along with his father and would do anything to please him. Although, he feels as if his father hates him because all his dad does is yell and find ways to punish him. So it does seem as if his father is not very fond of his son, but he is. The dad only does all of this stuff because he loves him, but his son doesn’t see that.

Then something trigged the boy to realize he could join the army. At the time this seemed like a great idea, I mean no bossy, rude dad to yell and tell him what to do and no school or work, it all seemed pretty easy considering he made the age cut-off.  The only hard part would be telling his parents, since his dad already hated him, or so he thought, he just assumed it would be ok with him. Once he asked his dad his dad got very upset, the two argued all night and at the point I am in the book, his dad still isn’t ok with it but the boy still wants to go.

Fairytale

*Authors Note: This is a creative romance piece*

Dan had it all; he had the looks, good grades and, was actually going to a college in California to be a surgeon. Also, Dan had the most perfect girlfriend in the world, Madi. She's a beautiful, skinny, tall, smart blonde who is also going to the same college as Dan to also be a surgeon. Although, one Tuesday at 3:00 pm that all changed. Dan was in his dorm; he had just finished his homework and was just chilling. Then his cellular device started ringing. Dan instantly jumped up and ran to the table where his phone laid, he hoping it was Madi, He quickly picked the phone up and answered with “Hello?” A girl on the other end replied “Hi Hun”, that’s when Dan knew it was Madi.

They talked for hours and hours. Finally Madi said she had to go but first she had something she needed to share with Dan. Then Madi told him that she was switching colleges to somewhere in New York and how she doesn’t want to be a surgeon anymore, she would like to be a teacher. Dan didn’t say a word, his mouth just dropped to the floor.  The first thing Dan did end up saying was “You are leaving me?”  Madi replied with a yes and how sorry she was, she said that she didn’t want to but it would be better for her future. They talked a little more about things and she continually said how much she loved him but Dan didn’t know what to say, I mean she was choosing to leave him right? He felt as if he should be upset at her, but after lots of thinking he decided he will move with her.

Except, there is only one problem, that they don’t have any medical colleges in New York. So Dan thought some more and made his final decision. Dan decided that he is going to drop out of college and move to New York with his girl friend, he made this decision because he was planning on proposing soon, and knows that Madi is the one for him. Dan feels as if his future isn’t in this college, it is in his wife and future family.  Once Dan told Madi his plan she jumped into his arms and said “I Love you.”Then Dan got down on one knee and proposed, of course Madi said yes, and the rest is a fairytale.

Assignment 1 response

If the point of view in “April Morning” by; Howard Fast, was different it would change the effect of the entire story. This novel is about a kid who has many problems with his dad and in order to escape him, the boy has decided he would like to goof to the army. Even though he and his dad fight a ton, his dad is making it clear that he doesn’t want his boy to go. The boy believes that his father just doesn’t want happiness for him.
Although, maybe if the story was told from the fathers point of view things would be seen differently. Maybe the dad hates fighting with his son but is just trying to look at for him by protecting him. It might be real interesting to find out what is going through his father’s mind, and what he is thinking of when certain things occur. For example, the boy believes that his father doesn’t want him to join the army because his father doesn’t wan t the best for him. However, the dad could possibly just be worried for his son to join the army and doesn’t want to lose him. You never know what could be going through the fathers mind, So I think it might be interesting to find the fathers point of view in the book “April Morning” by; Howard Fast.

"What other point of veiw would be interesting to look at in your book?" Journal

The point of view of the main characters dad in “April Morning” would be completely different then his.  The main character always look at his dad badly, doesn’t believe in the same things as his dad and him and his father are always fight. He repeatedly stated how much he does not like his dad, mostly because he says that his dad doesn’t care for him or like him.  Although, if the story was told from his dads point of few, things would be different.   For instance, the main character says his dad yells at him for the most stupid stuff, but if you look at the dad’s point of view, maybe there were reasons behind why he was upset, that maybe his dad really does love him but just don’t show his feelings. Also the father is probably just trying to teach and guide the child who requires some yelling, or perhaps the dad might have had a hard day at work and is just taking it out on him. You never know what the other person is going through or how they see the situation, that why different points of views are such an important thing to remember.

Socs v.s Greasers

Separation; is an act or instance of separating; a division between two different groups. There is separation between boys and girls, cats and dogs, ketchup and mustard; socs and greasers from the book “The Outsiders” by; S.E Hinton. Out of all these groups “The Outsiders” socs and greasers are the most separated. The socs and greasers are on the completely different side towns, wear different clothes, have different hair styles, and live completely different lives.

Socs live wealthy and put together, they dress themselves up very nice and their always looking very appropriate and presentable.  Although, with such a good well mannered life you would think they would have a well mannered behavior, but some of them are not even close to that. Those socs, the ones that are not goodly mannered, know they are all that, they know they are rich and look as perfect as a Barbie doll, which gives them a very big head. This makes them believe that they are better then everyone, especially the greasers.

The greasers are very poor, and they just get by day by day. Greasers also dress very poorly, and always have their hair slicked back with tons of grease. Most of the town’s people look at greasers as these trouble making kids who have no future and are never up to any good. Although, the truth about the greasers is that they are actually kind hearted, care and watch over each other. They treat and love everyone like they are family and they wish that there were no separation between the greasers and socs, just normal people.

Greasers, socs they are different in many ways. However, there is one thing they have in common that will always stay the same, they are both just groups of normal people. The problem they have is that they all have need to put aside what separates them to come together to realize they are just people.

9/11

9/11
                                                By: Abigail Sharpee

On September 11, 2001, two planes intentionally hit into the twin towers, not only destroying years of hard work, but most importantly taking the lives of thousands of innocent civilians. This horrifying tragedy changed the lives of Americans all over our country. Especially affected were the Americans who lost loved ones or had been touched by someone who was lost in the disaster of the twin towers, world trade center, and pentagon. It caused pain and sorrow to them knowing that they never got to say goodbye; some never found the bodies of their loved ones, or found out what had happened to them on that very depressing day.
However, one day the sign of relief and clarification came knocking for the Crowther family when they found some type of evidence of their beloved Welles who died in the South tower of the World Trait Center. One afternoon Mr. Crowther was reading about this woman who survived the twin tour hit and was saying that a man who carried a red handkerchief saved her and many others’ lives. Right then is when the Crowther’s knew that was their Welles, that is because ever since Welles was 6 he started wearing a red handkerchief everywhere he went, it was his trademark. So the Crowther’s contacted this woman and sent her a picture asking if Welles was really the man who had saved her life, her immediate response was “Yes that is the man who saved me from my death.”
Later on the woman began to explain what Welles did in the last few seconds of his life. She said that he lead about 5 people down a 65 flight staircase he had found which had a group of firemen waiting at the bottom. Once they reached the bottom, the firemen lead them to a pathway out of the building. Instead of following the rest of them to the exit, Welles climbed all the way back up and brought down more people to safety, he did this 6 times. On his 7th time up, the tower collapsed, not giving Welles the chance to rescue himself. So 24 year old Welles laid there, next to his red handkerchief and the others he didn’t get the chance to help.
For some it’s a day of remembrance like for the Cowther’s family; others it’s a day of thanks like for the ones who survived. However, for the entire nation, September 11, 2001 was a day that will go down in history followed by the heroic actions of our country’s people. We will not only mourn from the happenings of this day but we shall learn from it. The taking of lives and actions that occurred that day only proves that our country is strong; we will get back on our feet and improve on our mistakes. While patching up the holes that 9/11 created, we will also never forget the sacrifices made by our people that horrifying day.

Draft of the Introduction

“The Tell-Tale Heart”
Authors Note: This is a Draft of the introduction

Crazy, what does it mean to be crazy? According to Webster Dictionary, crazy means “to be mentally deranged”; although the definitions of some others are, “to be insane, and not like the usual person”; “to think of ironic thinks that not the average human being would”, and “to stand out from the crowd of normal citizens.”  So with all these verities of definitions, would a man who kills a guy in his sleep, chops the poor innocent man in too pieces over a tunb then burry the man under a floor, considered crazy? According to “The Tell-Tale Heart” by; Edgar Allen Poe, this type of behavior is not crazy at all, it is actually considered sane! How can that be? How can it be that a man murdering another man but through a slow and completely though out, bulletproof plan, be sane? It’s not!

To Be Proud

                        To Be Proud
                                       By: Abigail Sharpee

What does it mean to be proud? Proud is to have pride in something, to be happy in something or someone. Now what does it mean to be proud of your country? To be proud of your country means to have pride in and be happy of your country. I for sure am proud of my country. I am proud of the U.S.A for everything they have accomplished, and helped other countries accomplished.  I’m also proud on how strong and trustworthy our army and government is. Even though sometimes I don’t like some of their decisions over the years, I am very proud of the kind of country we have become and the things we have done in order to build up our country as strong as it is now.

A Letter to Mrs.Mallard

Dear Mrs. Mallard
In the tale “The Story of An Hour” it starts out making the reader fell bad for you because of your heart problem and the recent passing of your husband. Right away in the introduction it says how your sister doesn’t know how to tell you carefully that your husband passed, because you have a heart problem and she doesn’t want it to act up.
Then there is a rising in action, your sister told you and you go up, or rise up the stair to go be alone in your room. You cry a little then you began to think about how now you are free from your husband and can now do more and live more freely. Which, I find so wrong! You shouldn’t be at all, even just a tiny but excited your husband is gone, even if that does mean freedom! I believe that is where you went wrong, but it wasn’t yet the climax.
Once you looked out your window and saw new life and new opportunities, you wanted to go downstairs to go outside and explore your all your new openings. As soon as  you closed the door of your room, your life could never go back to the way it was, it was the “climax”. That is because little did you know your husband wasn’t dead and was waiting for you at the bottom of the staircase, your “falling action” would be you walking down the stairs to find that everything that just became right was taken away from you.
As soon as you got to the bottom and saw your, so you thought dead husband, at the bottom, your heart stopped and you passed away, that brining you to your resolution because you did get a new life, just not where you intended it to be. I learned from this plot structure to be careful what you wish for because it might come true but in a different way than you intended it to be.
                                                                                                    Sincerely,

The Character and Award Essay

The Misunderstanding
It was November 3, 2004 when the mistake occurred, I should have known this was a mistake, how could I be the one everyone wants to be like?! Here is what happened.  A few days before the mistake occurred I got a phone call from an unknown number. I answered with fright in my voice, scared of who would be calling. Once I said hello, they asked to see me, Lucy! I replied with, this is she?  Long story short, he was the person in charge of awarding big important awards to big important people. It turns out that I was voted for the award “The Person That Everyone Wants To Be Award!”  I have to arrive at Hollywood in 2 weeks to be awarded.
Most people would have called their best friend, or loved ones right away, but not me.  I sat down on my old, worn down green chair, and just thought “How could I be the one that everyone wants to be like?!” It just didn’t make much sense. So after a half an hour of thinking, I called my best friend ever (she is also my amazing sister!) After 15 minutes of screaming, she finally settled down, and we decided to go to the mall. It occurred to me that I need an entire new wardrobe, because I am famous now everyone wants to be like me!
So, I brought all the money I could find in my house and borrowed some from others. I ended up getting 15 beautiful tight fitting dresses, 25 pairs of skinny jeans, 178 adorable t-shirts, and 53 cute swimsuits.  Lastly I ended up getting a few new accessories and 2 new coach purses for my sister! Once I finished shopping I called my husband and told everything from the unknown number to me buying 2 new cute coach purses for my little sis. He was surprised and asked me where I was sitting on the plane?! In my head I was thinking, “Oh shot! I forgot all about getting the plane tickets!”, but I said “I’m sitting in first class!” He replied nice and we continued our conversation by talking about work. So the second I got off the phone with him, I went online and booked the best sit I could find. 3 days later (the day I left for Hollywood) I got on the plane, and little did I know Tom (the awards guy) had already bought me first class plane tickets! Of course I ended up sitting in that sit, but I was mad that I wasted all that money on a seat that I’m not going to even use!
After landing I received another call from Tom saying how his butler is to my left with the sign stating “Award Winning Lucy.” He told me how he doesn’t know who I am, and to not be offended.  I quickly looked to my right and found is butler with the sign. I told Tom I found him and asked him what I should call his butler. He said that I should call him Butler, and then told me that Butler will be caring for me in Tom’s huge house because I will not be able to meet Tom until the night of the award ceremony due to work issues. I responded with a yes so loud and high, I almost broke the windows!
Butler drove me to Tom’s house and helped me unpack. Butler and I got along great and he toke fantastic care of me for the last 3 days I had there. Once the day of the Award Ceremony came I was so nervous. Looking back on it now, I don’ know why I was. I had my speech all planed out and had practiced it one thousand times. Before I knew it, 8pm came. I got dressed and beautiful, then headed out the ceremony. When in the car I felt good and thought I would do great. I repeated to myself that the worst thing that could happen would be that you make a tiny mistake when saying my speech, but I was wrong, way wrong. When I got announced by Tom for the “Person Everyone Wants to be Award”, I got up on stage, smiled at Tom and before I could start my speech, Tom laughed.  He laughed and said this is the wrong Lucy, I meant to contact Luck Kate Hale, and she was the one voted for this award! HAHAHA, everyone was laughing! I ran off stage so fast, I was scared and didn’t know what to say, or do! It was November 3, 2011 when The Mistake of my life time first occurred.

Generosity-Quote Essay

Generosity

Generosity is sometimes difficult to spot. Some people do not recognize small actions of kindness. Although, the quote "No act of kindness no matter how small, is ever wasted"-Aesop, helps the public realize that no matter what favor or act of kindness you do, big or small, it will never be wasted.
That’s why I chose this quote; the meaning is a great lesson to be taught.  Teaching people that just giving a little can make a big difference in society, is a quality that everyone can carry on with them for several years. I also chose this quote because it really touched me. I found it inspiring and heartwarming to know that just the little things I do for someone, could have made their day!

After research information and the meaning behind the quote, I found that the quote reminded me of some situations that I have experienced while I was crutches. So, every day I would have to ask one of my friends to carry my books from class to class for me. To them carrying my book wasn’t a big deal, but to me it was. I really appreciated my friends doing that for me. So, once I read this quote, I began to connect to what the quote is stating that no matter how small your act of kindness is, it is always appreciated.

Although, appreciation cannot be possible without a form of generosity. However generosity is not spotted very often now days. Our generations of children have a difficult time identifying acts of kindness.  That’s why the quote, “No act of kindness no matter how small, is ever wasted” – Aesop, helps people realize that no matter what favor or act of kindness you do, big or small, it will never be wasted.
