Fake nails, fake hair, fake tan, fake personality equals a fake girl. Girls who dye their hair a thousand times  and spray tan themselves until they are 10 shades darker are fake, they aren't being themselves,  they are hiding the real them behind tans and makeup. No one wants to get  to know a girl who pretends like she's someone else and try's to be something she is not to get attention. People want to get to know girls who are themselves, and our confident with the way they naturally are and look. Fake nails, and spray tans don't make you beautiful its makes you fake. Being real is what makes every girl beautiful, so don’t ever try to hide yourself behind makeup and fake tans, just be real.

Senseless Violence

What comes to mind when you think of lotteries? Does money, happiness or fortune? Well the lottery in the short story "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, is not something you want to win.  This lottery was different from the others, the winner of the lottery doesn't get money and happiness, the winner gets stoned to death against his or her will.

The lottery begins with each man in each family throughout the entire community, must pick a piece of paper out of a big black box.  The man with the black circle on their paper is the one who won the lottery. Next, the winning man must bring his entire family up to the black box and each family member must pick a lottery ticket from another box. Who ever got the black dot out of the family, is the winner of the whole lottery. This lucky winner is forced to get stoned by the entire community. Once the winner I dead, the lottery ends and the big black box is put away until next time.

This makes the theme for the short story senseless violence. That is because there in no point of reason for the winner of the lottery to have to die, they just do it because the instructor (Mr. Summers) tells them that’s what has to happen.  Mr. Summers claims that " ..it is what keeps our community civilized", however many civilians disagree. Mr. Walters (a civilian) stated that no other communities do this anymore and how he wasn't sure if their community still should. Mr. Summers came back saying how it is a tradition and is something that must be continued. Although, many civilians disagree and don't want to continue the violent tradition that tears their community apart. That  is why the main theme of the story, "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, is senseless violence.

Take Care of Me

*Authors Note: This is a creative piece I wrote from the point of view of a window that feels unwanted and unloved by everyone*.
Dear Diary,

It's  April 23, I sit here, still unwashed, watching the snow as it slowly melts and the flowers beautifully begin to bloom.  However I am only able to watch from the very top of me because all the dirt has covered more than half of my, what use to be shining glass.  My owner has placed a sign on me which says "Wash Me", no one does. Although, some people do come and go, but never have the time or dedication to stop and wash me off. So, I sit here as the days go by hoping that the right person will stop and take there time to take care of me.

Truth about Mitosis

Truth about Mitosis
Breast Cancer, Lung Cancer, Leukemia, Brain Cancer, and many more, all begin with one terrible process, mitosis. Mitosis is the leading cause of all types of cancer. The horrifying, death taking cancer all starts with mitosis, which is the process of the splitting of chromosomes within the nucleus (Microbus).

Although, there is more to how mitosis really produces cancer cells. Cancer is produced when the process of mitosis loses control and overly produces and divides cells when your body doesn’t need them.  This is a loss of normal growth control (Orgins of Cancer). No matter what type of cancer it is, this out of control cell growth is what causes it. Once the mitosis has created the cancer cell, the cancer cells usually travel throughout different parts of the body and begin to grow and replace the tissue. So you could never smoke in your life but still get lung cancer (Orgins of Cancer).
However, once the mitosis spreads the cancer cell around the body it is still only considered one type of cancer, and that is determined by where the mitosis first began to split the chromosomes. For example, if cells from liver cancer transfer to another organ such as lungs, the cancer is still liver cancer and is not considered lung cancer (What is cancer). This is because the mitosis originally split and created cancer cells in the liver and traveled to your lungs so it makes the cancer liver cancer. Doctors are capable of once finding a cancer cell, tracking where it originally formed.
After the doctors have determined what type of cancer a person has, they give that patient many treatment options. There are about 10 main treatments doctors recommend to all different patients for all kinds of cancer. These top ten treatments are, Surgery, Chemotherapy, Radiation Therapy, Targeted Therapy, Immunotherapy, Hyperthermia, Bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell transplant, Photodynamic Therapy, Lasers in cancer treatment and lastly, Blood product donation and transfusion (Treatment Types).  The most popular treatment that cancer patients chose is surgery. Surgery is also the most accurate out of all the treatments.  This is because with surgery you are able to remove the cancer completely right away. However, surgery might now be an option depending on the patient’s health information and how long the cancer has been going on and spreading and how quickly they caught it (Treatment Types).

So as you can tell cancer can be a very serious condition, very life threatening and scary. Many people’s lives are taken away from them so quickly all because of mitosis, all because of chromosomes splitting inside of the nucleus. This is why mitosis is the leading cause of cancer because it is the process in which cancer cells are created, and that is the scary truth behind mitosis.

The Truth About Love.

*Authors Note: This essay is a theme essay on the book “Perfect Chemistry” by Simone Elkeles.*

Do you believe in love at first sight? Well Brittany and Alex did they both knew they were in love with each other the first time they saw each other in Chemistry class and the first time they got to work with each other and the sparks flew. That is why love is the main theme in the book “Perfect Chemistry” by, Simone Elkeles.
First off, Brittany and Alex were made Chemistry partners in Chemistry Class. The only thing is that Brittany and Alex are two different people and they don’t see eye to eye on anything. So when Brittany and Alex were partnered up together, they got so mad at the fact they had to be with each when they didn’t want to be, that in class they didn’t have a very good start. Alex would always make fun of Brittany, and Brittany did the same to him. Although, things turned with them when they both reached for the bottle of water and their hands collided. Little did they know that, that was the first step into their secret relationship.
However, Brittany isn’t always the easiest person to be around but when Brittany went to a party at the beach. She got sick it was Alex who grabbed her and bought her to safety. Everyone kept passing Brittany around because no one wanted to take care of her but when Alex saw this going on he grabbed her and took her home to safety without being harmed. Alex didn’t care who saw him doing this he just cared for Brittany and no one would step up to help her but Alex.  Alex came through for her and was Brittany’s knight in shining armor.
Lastly, it’s hard to see the person you love do something to put themselves in harm. When Alex was going to do a drug deal Brittany couldn’t stand for it. She couldn’t watch him throw his life away and risk getting hurt. Alex meant the world to Brittany and when Brittany didn’t want him to do the deal she poured out her feelings to him and said “Alex you’re my world and I can’t watch you go through with this so it’s the deal or me.”  Alex had given up the deal for Brittany because, Brittany was the only thing he wanted in life.
“I love you now, I loved you then and I have loved you way back when” This quote resembles they way Alex gave up his life for Brittany and Brittany has done the same for Alex. That is why the clear theme in the book Perfect Chemistry is love.

Lyrics v.s Poem

"Big Yellow Taxi" is wrote to let people know that you don't know what you got until its gone. The tone the author set for this poem/song is that she is depressed, and sad because they took something away from her that meant a lot. They mood is you feel sad but inspired by her because the readers know now to  don’t take things you have for granted. However, the song was very different, the mood seemed happy and the tone was almost cheerful. When I read it as a poem it came off sad but she sings the song happily.  This shows that maybe I shouldn't have took the poem the way I did and maybe I should have looked at it from different points of view also. Although, it almost confuses me because the words seem sad but her tone of voice when she sings it seem really happy. It frustrates me because now I don’t have a clue about what  the mood or tone of this songs is!

"Field Below" is wrote to let the readers know that once something is gone for good you will miss it and wish it never left.  The tone is very regretful, the writer regrets her decision of leaving her hometown for the city. That reflects on the mood of the song and makes the readers/listeners  very sad for the girl in the song. However, unlike the song "Big Yellow Taxi", once I listened to "Field Blow" the mood of the song stays the same, even the way she sings it makes the listeners feel sad for her.

Family As We Know It.

*Author'snote- This is a 5 paragraph essay on graded on theme from the book "Rules Of The Road." *
Each family has got its share of problems and it’s about working through those problems as a family, that’s what makes you a stronger family. Same goes for Jenna in the book “Rules Road of the Road” her family has got its share of problems but Jenna promised her sister that they would work thought those problems and become a better and stronger family. That is why the main theme in the book Rules of the Road is family.
To start off with, Jenna’s father is an alcoholic and left Jenna and her sister Faith at a very young age. They grew up there whole life without a father and a mother who was trying her best to be good mother for both of her girls. As the years went on Jenna became older and started to watch over Faith more and more and sooner or later she was always there for her sister yes the fights would come and go but they still stayed together as sisters. Yes both of those girls longed for a father but they both knew far too well that their father would not go get help so they knew that it was now or never that they shaped that family the way they wanted it.
However, when Jenna went on a road trip for 5 months of her life and she left everything she knew at home and left her family at home. She was scared that going on this trip would be hurting her family because she knew she couldn’t leave home without her sister being harmed. Jenna was also aware that her father might shine around Faith and her mother which cause them both pain and if she left they would have to deal with the hurt all by themselves.
In addition, Jenna also choices to watch over her severely sick grandmother, who is sick with a disease. Jenna visits her grandmother at the nursing home almost every day after school and would drop anything to be with her, and not only her grandmother, Jenna would drop anything for anyone is her family. This reminds me of the book “The Outsiders” by; S.E Hinton, because it’s a very family related book, everyone watches over each other and doesn’t let there family get hurt, just like the book “Rules of The Road”, Jenna cares about her family and protects everyone in it, her life, just like “The Outsiders”, revolves around family.
“I guess I’m just afraid of leaving my family, they are my everything, they need me and I need them” This is something Jenna said to her grandmother while she as in process of deciding to leave to Texas or not. This is just proves how much family mattered in this family. Jenna relies on her family and they rely on her, that’s why her decision on going on the road trip or not was so difficult.  At the end Jenna did end up going, however she talked to her family members almost every day on the phone, this is why the books main theme is family.

Prediction Piece

*Authors Note: This is a Prediction piece from the book Rules of the Road by Joan Bauer.*

As I continue to read this story I get more and more into it, and I have begun to have a prediction of what will happen. I predict that Mrs. Gladstone will not give the business to her slob of a son, Elden, but she is going to give it to the hardworking Jenna. I think this because you can tell that Mrs. Gladstone really likes Jenna, and she can tell that Jenna enjoys the business and is very responsible. Just like what Jenna grandmother told her, "As long as you try hard and never give up things will come your way", so I believe since Jenna has worked so hard with the store that Mrs. Gladstone will hand the business over to Jenna. Now, Mrs. Gladstone might be old and mean but she has a softer side. She will not give into Elden, in my mind she is not the weak minded. I really hope that she comes to her senses and hands over the business to Jenna, or another loyal worker of hers.

Text Analysis Piece

*Authors Note: This is a reflection piece on a quote from the book I’m reading called "The Rules of the Road" by Joan Bauer. The quote is taken place in the story, after a very important friend of a woman named Mrs. Gladstone, passes away. Mrs. Gladstone is talking to Jenna, her driver, about just giving up on a mission they've been trying to accomplish because of this friends passing.*

"I just know things happen more than I'd like because the world has got more than its share of problems."

These wise words spoken by Mrs.Gladstone shows that she is not an old pathetic woman even though she might come off as it. She is wise and strong-minded; she learned so much and knows almost all you can about life. Although she does come across problems throughout her life time, she is able to solve them. In fact, these words were taken place during one of those problems. She was about to give up on something that held the most importance to her life. This quote does resemble, not only intelligence and wisdom, but also the fact of not giving up; through these words, you are shown that you can’t always have things your way. You can tell that Mrs. Gladstone was exhausted with all the problems that had occurred lately, and her close friend, Harry Bender, passing, took her off the edge.

Mrs. Gladstone was an older lady that had cared a lot about her costumers and the shoes she sold. She had faced her problems in life just like everyone else had to. But she of all people did not under any circumstance put up with any nonsense ever, and that is how she was known by the public.

Although, this quote shows that she almost gave up being a tough women like she normally is. Mrs. Gladstone is wise and does end up coming to her senses with a little help from Jenna. This quote is when Mrs. Gladstone really got put off the edge by all of the drama occurring, and this was what saved her from making a big career mistake. That career mistake was handing over her business to her son, this would have been terrible because her job is her life and if she would have given up her job, its giving up her life. If she never even thought about handing the business over to her son, she would have simplified her life and many of her problems.

However, this quote is appealing to me because she is such a tough, strong hearted person and kind of reminds me of the character Cammie from the book “I’d Tell You I Love You but Then I’d Have to Kill You” by Ally Carter. Cammie, is a tough spy in training who would never take any bullying or non-sense from any one. Also, just like Mrs. Gladestone, Cammie is independent and strong minded, also does things by herself, the right way, and her way.

So to me, the quote reassures all readers that even the toughest people, have their problems in life. But no matter what your hardships are in life, you have to face them and try to make the best out of it, just like Mrs. Gladstone did, and things will all come together in the end.

So Sorry

I have taken

that was in
the closet
and which
you were probably
saving
for the mission

Forgive me
 I was lazy

looked so amazing

Paragraph-
This is a poem about the book “I’d tell you I love you but then I would have to kill you” It’s about a girl who is a spy. In this poem, the tone is that this girl is incapable to do things by herself, she is lazy and is not sincerly sorry. The mood of book is that Cammie is mad and frustrated. In this poem Cammie is talking to Bex and is mocking Bex that she has to go get more gear because Cammie took it.

Mother to Son

In the poem "Mother to Son" there are many differnet types of figurative lanuguage. One of them is metaphors. The methphor used in this peom is"Life ain't been no crystal stair" this is used to show what that the mothers life has hard and rough but she has and still is pushing through it. She did not get things handed to her, she had to work for what she wante d, and she is telling this to her son for him to know to never give up. This makes the mood of the poem make you feel sympathatic for her and look up to her. The author was trying to make us stronger and make the tone of the story to never give up and even when times get tough to push through it, just like what the mother is telling her son.

Character Discription

Cammie Morgan is quite an astonishing teenager, she goes to Gallagher Academy For Exceptional Young Woman, which is not the typical all girls school. This school teaches and trains these girls on how to be an excellent spy. They are taught martial arts, hot to work with chemical warfare, and how to crack CIA codes. Lots of people call this spectacular school, “A school for Genius’s” but no, its school for spy’s and Cammie’s mom is the Headmistress.
Even with Cammie having a Headmistress mom, she doesn’t get special treatment, she has to strive and work as hard as everyone else. However, that’s not an issue for Cammie, because she is very hardworking and determined. In addition, Cammie is super nice, outgoing and laidback. She is the tallest girl in her grade, and is  as skinny as a twig. Cammie also has eyes as blue as the sky, and the most beautiful light brown hair in the world. She has tons of friends and all teachers love her. Although, the one thing that gets Cammie into some trouble is her curiosity, sometimes she takes it too far and discovers things and meets people she wishes she never did.

Dear Mother

Authors Note: This is a letter to Jenna’s Mother from Jenna, from the book “Rules of the Road” By; Joan Bauer. This piece is describing the conflict and resolution of the book.

Dear Mother,
In the beginning I didn’t understand, I didn’t understand why you didn’t want me to go with Mrs. Gladestone on the Road Trip.  I felt as if you were trying to make me miserable and not experience new adventures.  As if you were boxing me in and not letting me live life, as if you want me to be stuck with my many problems here at home.
However, now I get it, I understand why you were keeping me here. You were just trying to protect me and teach me to not run away from my problems. Mother, you were teaching me new life lessons and helping me get through the issues I have been having lately. So, thank you mother, for watching over me and helping me realize that I shouldn’t have gone on the road trip to run away from my problems, I should have faced them.

                                                                             Love,
                                                                                Jenna

Road to Recovery

Abigail Sharpee
Hour 3
Authors note: This is my formal essay; from the book “Rules of the Road” by Joan Bauer. This piece is describing the character development of Jenna Boller.
The Road to Recovery
Have you ever felt the need to change? Have you felt if you changed the way you acted, your whole life would change? The main character, Jenna from the book “Rules of the Road” by Joan Bauer, felt the same way before she set out on an adventure that changed her as a person. Jenna Boller got asked to be the driver for her boss, Mrs. Gladstone, at the shoe store from which she worked at. This road trip goes from Illinois to Texas, and they would be in Texas for 4 months. Throughout the trip, Jenna majorly develops as a character and seems quite different by the time she returns home.
Jenna Boller  is a sophisticated, misunderstood teenager who  took care of her high maintenance sister Faith, her overwhelmed mother, and her alcoholic father. With all of these problems going on at home, all Jenna wanted was to move away from them, even if it meant having to spend four months with Mrs. Gladstone. However, Mrs. Gladstone had more of an influence on her then she expected.
Jenna Boller had never been the most popular, or the prettiest girl in her high school, and hasn’t really found out who she wanted to be and what her sense of personality or style was like yet. Except, Jenna isn’t really looking for who she is, she has nearly given up. She feels almost as if there is nothing more to her besides brains, and homework. Although, she does discover that there is more to her, she just hasn’t found her other half yet.
This is quite similar to me, I feel as if I haven’t found my other half yet either. Except the difference is that I haven’t stopped looking and that I have a longer time to uncover who I really am and my true friends, then Jenna did. Also, I feel as if I have found more of myself then Jenna has. Therefore, Jenna and I are a tad bit similar but yet I’d say that we are more different. Therefore, I believe that Jenna and I are similar, yet we have our differences Jenna keeps more to herself than I, and she has more and bigger issues to deal with than me. Although, there is a character from the book “Boy Proof” by’ Cecil Castellucci, who is very similar to Jenna and goes by the name of Victoria. Victoria spends the second half of the school year trying to go from geek to popular for the first boy she has ever crushed on, Max. The book is basically about how she finds her true self, and the way she develops as a person. These two characters, Jenna and Victoria are both alike because they both try to find out who they really are, and have rather interesting journeys doing so.
Over the road trip, Jenna learns a lot about how to style her tomato red hair, and what clothes will blend nicely with it. She also discovers how to make business deals, the right way to treat others, and how to live a good life the right way.  Jenna meets some really spectacular people that made a significant impact on her new self. By the time Jenna returned home she had a new hair-do, a new way of living, and different ways to face, address and solve her problems. These changes demonstrate that Jenna is a dynamic character. Those dramatic changes owe great thanks towards Mrs. Gladstone, who was there with her every step of the way.
New and improved Jenna took her life into her own hands, and realized that you don’t have to be the prettiest nor most popular girl at school, you just have to be you. Now thanks to the trip, she knows who she really is; she has more self confidence and can’t wait for school to start up again so that she can go show off the new Jenna Boller.

Dear Jenna

Abigail Sharpee
Hour 3
Authors Note: This is my creative piece; a letter to Jenna from the book “Rules of the Road” by Joan Bauer.  This piece is describing the cause and effects going on throughout the book.
Dear Jenna,
I know that life isn’t always the best and with that I can relate, but I do think your choice between going on the Road Trip or staying home, was a good one. I believe you did handle the decision well, and the result was good also; you learned some very tremendous life lessons, some of which will help you throughout your lifetime. I can relate to your decisions, yet I don’t think that you should have run away from your problems. Instead, I believe that you should have faced them before you left.
If you handled your problems right away, you could have went on the road trip without a single worry on your mind, without stressing about all of the problems you left in Chicago. Also you are only escaping your problems for the 4 months that you are gone; for when you return home, the problems will have worsened for you to handle. I’m not trying to stress you out, but next time I would recommend facing your problems right away, rather than pushing them aside for later and procrastinating.
Also, there is another situation I would have handled a little better. It was when Mrs. Gladstone was having the first problems with her leg; I think you shouldn’t have been so soft on her, and not let Alice do the enforcing. Mrs. Gladstone is a stubborn woman and she needs to be pushed a little more in the right direction to do what’s right. For example, when you were driving her back from the doctors and you asked her if she would like to get a wheelchair or not, she said no. So you moved on even though you thought it would have been a wise decision to use the wheelchair. In the future, you should have just forced her to get the wheelchair because you knew it was the right thing to do for her health, and by not getting the wheelchair it lead to some difficulties for her to get  from place to place, until Alice stepped in and made Mrs. Gladstone ride in one.
Besides those minor situations, I think your decisions have been very good. I can tell that this road trip has had quite an impact on your attitude and outlook on life. You have changed so much as a person as you seem happier and more outgoing then you ever was before. You’ve also learned how to handle tough situations better than you would have before, and how to control your emotions other than bottling it all up inside.
Jenna, you’re a smart girl. You just have to know how to handle things and life would be so much easier for you. Don’t make life harder than it needs to be. Don’t try to hide from problems that will come and find you in the end, it won’t do you any good.

                                                                        Sincerely,
                                                                               Abigail Sharpee

Prediction Speech

*Authors Note: This is a Prediction piece from the book Rules of the Road by Joan Bauer.*

In the book  Rules of the Road by Joan Bauer, Jenna, the main character is on a road trip across the country to Texas. She doesn’t really know why but all she knows is that she is driving a rich snobby woman, who happens to be her boss,  around the country in a Cadillac. On top of all of that the rich woman, Mrs. Gladstone's hip is going out and she can't walk. Also Jenna just got her drivers licenses and now she's hulling this woman around. It’s a lot of responsibility for Jenna, she is only a normal 16 year old girl, its hard for her to handle all of this responsibility.

As I continue to read this story I get more and more into it, I really just want to read what happens in the end. I have begun to have a prediction of what will happen. I predict that Mrs. Gladstone will not give the business to her slob of a son, Elden, but she is going to give it to the hardworking Jenna.I think this because you can tell that Mrs. Gladstone really likes Jenna, and she can tell that Jenna enjoys the business and is very responsible. Thank You Ma'am

*Authors Note: This a piece about a quote from the short story "Thank You Ma'am".*

“Roger, you go to that sink and wash your face,” said the woman, whereupon she turned him loose--at last. Roger looked at the door—looked at the woman—looked at the door—and went to the sink.

This quote resembles trust, that Roger now trusts the woman and is beginning to realize that she is not there to hurt and punish him for the wrong he has done. She is taking him under her wing and showing him that there are better ways to get what you want in life without hurting others. Roger here is coming to the conclusion that the woman is trying to help him by feeding and cleaning him up.

As a result, when the woman let Roger loose as he had been waiting for, he glanced at the door and then at the woman, debating whether he should run away, or stay. Then he repeatedly looked at the door and the woman, and went to the sink to wash off his face as told. He decided to go to the sink because of his trust of the woman and Roger knew that nothing good would come from attempting to escape. Rogers trust turned into something great, by not running away, he got food in his stomach and cleaned up, all it took was a little trust in the woman.

Boy Proof

*Authors Note: This is a prediction piece on a book I recently began to read called "Boy Proof" by; Cecil Castelucci*

Egg, real name Victoria Jurgen, a high school girl who took the nickname "Egg" after a hero in a Science Fiction movie call "Terminal Earth." she not only names herself after the character but she acts, exactly like her too. Egg, Considers herself "boy proof", she does not like boys, or associate with them, and they ignore her right back. Until one day a boy named Max joined almost every single one of her classes. Now, Max is always around her and hanging out with her. This is weird for Egg, in her eyes she is boy proof and to have this one boy just pop right into her life, makes her uncomfortable. Max, however, is the opposite, he feels comfortable around her, as if Egg is the only one who understands him but really she just wants him to leave. Although, lately in the book I've noticed that Egg and Max have began to grow closer and closer. I predict that Max will begin flirting and crushing on Egg, and Egg will also begin to have feelings for Max she has never experienced before. Which is good because I believe that Max would be good for Egg, he understands her and cares for her in a way no one ever has? At the end of the book I think, and hope that Egg and Max will be a couple.
